hahaha! I agree with you darkspawn316, it was a little slow paced. I think they were just trying to copy 2001: A Space Odissy.

As graceful as a pure-white swan on a pristine, tranquil lake, in the morning mist.
And underneath it all, the fire-power to blow any Klingon Bird of Prey or Romulan Warbird out of the water!

Yeah, thats how movies were made 30 years ago. For Star Treks first time on the big screen, its a good film. The next Star Trek films contribute to the first film: they also contain the visuals and Enterprise Refit, but have additional action and storylines you may find more to your liking!
Personally, I think …
Personally, I think this movie should’ve been called “Star Trek: The Slow Motion Picture.” The visuals were great, and the Enterprise Refit is gorgeous, but the pacing was too slow, for my taste.
Yes – Jerry …
Yes – Jerry Goldsmith did the score for this movie. His theme was adapted for the TV show.
With all that …
With all that padding, it’s a wonder they even found the time to have an adventure.

1:59 to 2:02 Is that a slowed-down rendition of TNG I can hear, eight years before TNG was first aired?

You don’t believe me then listen to the Directors commentary on your DVD. He said it there and in interviews in the year 1982.
PS. the space man never waved in Star Trek The Motion Picture. I know because I have every version ever made.
Actually, when this …
Actually, when this movie came out millions of fans felt the same. Most said it was cold, that the characters were two dimensional and distant. After waiting 12 years they felt fans deserved better.
No, the shots were …
No, the shots were reused in Star Trek II. They had a *very* limited effects budget. They could not afford to reshoot existing footage even if they wanted to.
Take another look. The spacesuited guy is there in Star Trek II. He’s waving at the ship. The first few seconds, with the flip, were cut out.
This scene …
This scene represents the heart of Trek.

The past 9 star trek movies have been doing that.

This movie was trying to echo 2001: A Space Odyssey. The new movie is trying to echo Star Wars.

@lears82, Then Kirk would not been able to see her. This is Scotty giving his former Captain a treat.
@TRUMPER007 True …
@TRUMPER007 True but, after seeing the final cut in 1979 The execs at Paramont hated the movie. They thought it would make a little profit not the hit it was. PS the movie was released on December 11, 1979.
why didnt they just …
why didnt they just fly in the back way???
Thanks – I always …
Thanks – I always thought the scenes were the the same, just edited. When the box-office went beserk in 1979/80 I am pretty sure the Paramont execs knew there would be a sequel!
