I was on vacation taking pictures with my camera and card I’ve used for several years. I had about 10 pictures left on the card when it told me I needed to format. I didn’t because I don’t want to lose the pictures. I’ve tried downloading to my computer but it tells me the card doesn’t have any pictures. Is there any way to retrieve them? And how can I keep this from happening in the future?
Try a card reader (10.00) and http://www.recuva.com/ and try a deep scan and after you have retrieved the pics, then format in the camera. Your card might be corrupt and it might be time for a new card.

When I accidentally deleted image files from my card, I used a image file recovery program called ZAR. It successfully recovered almost all the images.
The following link gives the download and recovery steps.
